Practice Philosophy

I believe in facilitating evidence-based therapy, integrating an array of theoretical foundations, based on the specific needs of each unique client I serve.  The quality of our counselor-client relationship is critical to positive outcomes.

With a background as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, I believe in being an advocate in treating individuals with disabilities, trained to look at the whole person. An ecological, transformative rehabilitation perspective that addresses the person-environment context of disability and seeks to assist in order to adapt to your full potential to the physical and attitudinal environments that you live, work, learn and recreate. This philosophy comes from a culturally competent perspective that respects individual differences. I believe this training and experience adapts to my work as a Licensed Professional Counselor in a holistic and comprehensive treatment approach.

A strength-based perspective is an empirical approach that has been the foundation of my practice philosophy.  I seek to apply my background to a new career in private clinical practice and psychotherapy.

Areas of Expertise

  • Individuals with Disabilities: Rehabilitation counseling is a specialization within the profession of mental health counseling to best serve the entire range of disabilities and to reflect a truly holistic and inclusive point of view. Rehabilitation is distinguished from other forms of psychiatric care by focusing on assisting individuals to achieve life goals that are blocked by symptoms and dysfunctions.
  • Substance Use Disorder: Obtained specialized training in co-occurring disorders. Trained as an Addiction Counselor in Methadone Assisted Treatment. Substance use disorders, in particular, occur with mental illness and worsen the disease course. I consider underlying assumptions and treat symptoms as one facet of the person’s life domains to increase quality of life.
  • Veteran’s and Military Families: Having worked with and serving Veteran’s as a federal employee at Department of Veteran’s Affairs for 11 years and completed three internships working with Veteran’s: 1) Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counseling for my Associates Degree in AODA/SUD 2) Rehabilitation Counseling at Department of Veterans Affairs 3) Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling at Milwaukee Veteran’s Hospital – gives me a unique perspective and level of skills to serve our military personnel and their families.
